Chapter 12

The back window of the car bursts and my first thought is: what a terrible shot.

“Find them!” I yell. I know Trib is already on it, but I say it anyway. Her drones move. Magnus runs towards us. I hear heavy breathing over the comms and I know Talon and Vice are moving too.

As I turn and run for the car, I have the vague sense of where the shot came from. Somewhere in the buildings behind us, in the upper windows. Third floor, probably. I feel the crosshairs on my back as I run towards the little red car.

The car wheels squeal as they spin wildly, the old woman putting her pedal down to the floor. I see her jerk the wheel, turning the car. She does a fantastic drift around the drop off point to the school, using the U-turn like a speedway, coming out the other side and back towards me.

I have a moment to glance over my shoulder and see Magnus coming, his face a mask of blind fear. His past traumas are coming undone inside him. He won’t be able to stop them. The old woman is already peeling out. She’s not coming back for the mailbox.

All that is over now. They’re about to vanish and we’ll have to wait another six months for them to make contact again, once they think they’re safe.

“Trib, I need a drone on that car.”

“On it!”

I run before she gets to me, hauling ass for the corner where I know she’ll have to slow down to make the turn. It’s icy, so she’ll probably slow down a lot, even if she doesn’t want to.

They pass me and the scene that flashes by in the car is chaos. Astrid is hunched down, the old woman has a hand on Astrid’s back to keep her bent over. The same hand holds an old pistol, like some World War II relic that probably still works better than I’ll want it to. She drives with one hand, keeping her eyes on the building where the shots must’ve come from.

When they get to the corner, I get the break I waited for. They turn right, giving me time to get close and leap onto the trunk. The back window is spiderwebbed and kicks through like paper.

And just like that, I’m in the back seat.

The old woman tries to bring the pistol to bear, but I slap it easily from her hand, pulling out my own to put against the back of her neck.

“Just keep your eyes on the road and get us out of here,” I tell her. “I’m not here to hurt you.”

“The hell you aren’t.” Her voice is cantankerous and more British than I expected.

Astrid looks at me. She has nearly black hair, which Magnus told me was like her mother’s. But her eyes are the same blue as Magnus’s and they have the same penetrating stare, like she sees right through me.

“You’re going to be all right, Astrid. Just stay calm.
